Earthworks Data Catalog

Earthworks is Stanford's geospatial data catalog. Earthworks provides the ability to search, and evaluate over 90,000 spatial datasets, with the ability to download or directly connect to over 60,000 public domain datasets. Earthwork's uses a federated search strategy, across dozens of partner institutions, to create discoverability beyond Stanford's data collections. With advanced filtering and explicitly spatial searching, Earthworks make finding data easy. With direct access to archival and derivative downloads in a number of common formats, as well as direct access to web-based spatial data services, like WFS and WMS, Earthworks makes using data easy, too.

Earthworks is based upon GeoBlacklight, and is maintained by an international community of users and developers, through the Geoblacklight.org Community.

ArcGIS Online & Living Atlas

Our instututional subscription to ArcGIS.com and the entire suite of Esri software provides resarchers at Stanford with instant access to hundreds of throusands of authoritative datasets (federal, state and local government organizations in the U.S. almost universally distribute their data and maps through ArcGIS.com), powerful cloud-based analysis capabilities and apps like Fieldmaps and StoryMaps for specialized use of spatial data for everything from field data collection to public outreach through mapping.

Google Earth Engine

Google Earth Engine combines a multi-petabyte catalog of satellite imagery and geospatial datasets with planetary-scale analysis capabilities and makes it available for scientists, researchers, and developers to detect changes, map trends, and quantify differences on the Earth's surface. Earth Engine's public data archive includes more than forty years of historical imagery and scientific datasets, updated and expanded daily.

Stanford maintain's an institutional subscription to Google Earth Engine which allows our users to make use of their @stanford.edu credentials to access the platform, and leverage their Stanford provided Google Drive and other services, in Earth Engine.

To obtain access for yourself, your lab, or your students, please contact stacemaples@stanford.edu

Geocoding Services - locator.stanford.edu

Geocoding is the process of taking a text-based description of a location, such as an address or place-name, and returning geographic coordinates, typically a latitude/longitude pair, to identify a location on the Earth's surface.

The Stanford Geospatial Center provides a geocoding service to help researchers convert large location datasets into GIS point coordinates.

The current service provides geocoding for North American & South American street addresses, postal codes, administrative designations, and populated places. You can access the service through ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and R.

A full reference to using Stanford Geocoding services can be found at locator.stanford.edu

To access the Address Locator services in ArcGIS Pro:

  • Connect to the Stanford Network, directly or using Stanford's AnyConnect VPN
  • Start ArcGIS Pro and go to Insert>Connections>Server>New ArcGIS Server
  • For the 'Server URL' use: https://locator.stanford.edu/arcgis
  • Leave the Username/Password blank
  • Click Finish
  • Under the new locator.stanford.edu ArcGIS Server Connection, expand the directory to see the available Services
  • Right-click on the geocoding service you would like to use, and select Add To Project
  • Expand the Locators folder and note that the selected service has been added to the project, and can be used for geocoding.

To access the Address Locator services in ArcGIS Desktop:

  • Connect to the Stanford Network, directly or using Stanford's AnyConnect VPN
  • In ArcCatalog, or the Catalog Panel in ArcMap, expand the GIS Servers item
  • Double-click the Add ArcGIS Server item
  • Leave the default "Use GIS Services" option, click Next
  • For the 'Server URL' use: https://locator.stanford.edu/arcgis
  • Note: you must manually change URL from HTTP to HTTPS
  • Leave the Username/Password blank
  • Click Finish
  • Under the new locator.stanford.edu ArcGIS Server Connection, expand the directory to see the available Services
  • Drag-and-drop the service you wish to use, into your Map Window to activate the locator for the current project.
