Digital Library Systems and Services (DLSS) develops innovative services - sustainable solutions (not just technologies or proof-of-concept projects) that advance teaching, learning and research at one of the world’s leading universities. We are a mission-driven organization that emphasizes open, collaborative work and community engagement within Stanford and with partner institutions around the world. What follows is a sampling of some of the services that DLSS supports.

Stanford Digital Repository

Stanford Digital Repository (SDR) supports management of scholarly information resources of enduring value to Stanford. Faculty, students, and researchers use SDR services to promote and protect the products of their work. Scholars around the world use content in the SDR in their research. The benefits of this service distinguish the SDR from other content storage or management options on campus: deposited content is preserved in a robust, reliable, and secure environment for access by scholars today and by generations to come.

SearchWorks

SearchWorks is Stanford University Libraries' official online search tool for books, media, journals, databases, government documents and more. SearchWorks now supports searches in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Spotlight at Stanford

Spotlight at Stanford is an application for showcasing digital content in easy-to-produce exhibits. It is available for use by the Stanford community and its partner organizations. Spotlight at Stanford users can quickly build their own online exhibits featuring digital content stored within and outside of the Stanford Digital Repository without having to develop their own project interface or use a proprietary system.

Digitization services

Stanford University Libraries provides high quality digitization services (digital scanning, reformatting, and capture of born digital materials) of items from various library collections. Highly trained staff combine state-of-the-art digitization equipment with state-of-the-art best practices to provide support for collection-level digitization projects, systemic digitization (en masse digitization efforts), and patron requests for small sets of items.

Electronic theses and dissertations

In close collaboration with the Office of the Registrar, SUL develops and maintains a system for managing the submission and publication of theses and Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) collections. The ETD solution integrates with Axess (the University's student information and administrative system) and ensures that all submitted ETDs are stored in the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR) for long-term preservation and made available for discovery via SearchWorks.
