La Universidad de Stanford y una biblioteca de 11,000 volúmenes reciben al primer grupo de estudiantes (425 hombres y 130 mujeres) en octubre de 1891.  Desde sus inicios la nueva institución establece vínculos con América Latina al llegar John Casper Branner como jefe del Departamento de Geología al año siguiente.  Branner ya había visitado el hemisferio sur varias veces y lo haría de nuevo con expediciones científicas al Brasil en 1899 y 1911.   No sorprende que las primeras tesis de maestría con enfoque latinoamericano mostraran la influencia de Branner: geología en América Central (1911) o región petrolera mexicana (1912).
